Artist’s Statement
This is from the northern soul collection depicting a young lady looking across the dance floor from the upper balcony of the Wigan Casino. The title is from a massive record from the time “Pain in my heart” by the Poppies.
Russ Winstanley is a Wigan DJ who is best known for his championing of Northern Soul music. In 1973 he founded the famous Wigan Casino All-Nighters at which he was the original DJ. Over 4 million people passed through the venue until it closed in December 1981.
Dean Parrish is an American soul singer from New York, best known for the song, "I'm on My Way", which became famous for being the last record that was played at the last Northern Soul all-nighter at the Wigan Casino.
Pain in my heart by David Barrow
David Barrow was born in 1959, in Parbold and spent his formative years there. Then moving to Wigan, he began painting seriously at the age of 19. Proud of his hometown, David’s work has developed in style over the years, yet remains consistently autobiographical and nostalgic. David has vividly captured Wigan and Parbold in a number of well-regarded oil paintings. They show the heritage of where he grew up and raised his own family. David’s paintings have been featured five times in the Summer exhibition at the Royal Academy, and he has also exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy of Fine Art.
