Artist’s Statement - Memories of Places Once Visited
My current work is inspired by ancient frescoes found in the Rupestrian churches of the Sassi in Southern Italy. The peeling, fractured, ancient paintings took my breath away. My interpretation of these ancient frescoes is revealed in paintings distressed and layered with marks which are made to look as though the work is from another age. Hints of Gold and bronze appear among the earth colours I paint with. I work energetically trying to recall a memory or feeling which then hopefully evokes a similar emotional response in the viewer.
