Artist's Statement

Since 2010, Sula has regularly worked as Artist in Residence at Potton Hall Classical Recording Studio/Concert Hall in Suffolk. She makes many drawings in the presence of the musicians as they rehearse. In her studio, she works from the sketches to make paintings and drawings. Sometimes these works are made on sheet music. Working in the presence of musicians, she is acutely aware of their vulnerability combined with their potential power as performers.

Sula Rubens has worked with quartets such as the Elias Quartet, the Doric String Quartet and the Brodsky Quartet. Solo performers include pianists Jean-Efflam Bavouzet and Libor Novocek, violist Robin Ireland and violinist Bradley Creswick.

Two Musicians (Elias Quartet) by Sula Rubens A.R.W.S.

  • Sula Rubens studied at Central/St. Martin’s School of Art (BA Hons Fine Art), where she was influenced by working practices and theories of artist/tutors – Tricia Gillman, Alan Reynolds, Norman Ackroyd, Anthony Whishaw and Cecil Collins. Since graduating in 1989, she has practised as a painter and printmaker, living, working and exhibiting in many countries (including Gdansk, Poland; Amsterdam, Holland; Ireland, Greece and Spain).

Virtual Images - Where artworks are shown framed or within a room setting the images have been created using virtual/augmented reality software in some instances. The images are provided to give an idea of the scale of the artwork in the context of a room and the style of the framing. They should not be viewed as completely accurate e.g. the scale and the style/colours of the frame may vary slightly.

An online gallery with an augmented reality option is very forward looking and very appealing to the buyer.

The picture arrived this afternoon, very well packed and in excellent condition. It is indeed a very fine picture.

The painting is received and is a really nice small study-like work...

Thank you very much for all your help.
