Artist’s Statement
Also a painting that features in the Titian exhibition currently on view at the National Gallery. It was commissioned by Alfonso I d’Este, Duke of Ferrara, and one of the celebrated bacchanals. This is study of Bacchus catches the moment, when, suddenly coming across Cretan princess Ariadne, whose ship sails away in the distance, falls in love at first sight with her and leaps from his chariot towards her, convulsed with the sudden hit of overwhelming passion. Colour, flesh, emotion and the body in full movement.
