This particular painting was part of a series looking at adding very definite facial responses to the paintings, in terms of a gasp or a look of surprise. Very often I am looking for something more subtle than this, a moment after someone has spoken or the moment before somebody responds to a question.
In addition to this change of direction I also looked to quieten the palette and isolate strong colour rather than use it universally as I often do.
